Our President has stated that we are not at war against Islam, but Radicals.
Donald Trump has called for a moratorium on accepting Muslims into our country. (At least until the vetting system is improved.)
Many are wrestling with the question: Is Islam or are Muslims the enemy?
We hear things and wonder. But if we voice our concerns we are immediately branded as intolerant or worse, prejudice and crazy.
So we are forced to “keep quiet” and accept the Muslim community as it presently stands. We are pressured into repeating the claim – Islam is a religion of peace.
But is it?
First, let’s differentiate between Mohammed, Islam as represented by the Koran (Quran, or Qu’ran) and Muslims.
In an effort not to insult Muslims we have been instructed to pretend that Mohammed was not a vile person. But the history books and even the Koran are clear. The man was not nice. He did not start out that way, but he sure ended that way. Marrying a 6 year old girl and consummating the marriage when she turned 9. After being killed in battle Mohammed took his adopted son’s wife and when told that was disgusting, he declared all adoption illegal. Now in muslim countries hundreds of thousands of orphaned muslim children live as slaves and second class citizens. Fortunately, there are groups of caring people who in a few cases have set up orphanages, but far too few. Mohammed beheaded Jews and Christians and declared anyone other than Muslims were infidels and deserving of death.
So let’s not even pretend. History is clear. The man does not fit our definition of good. Even secularists have to admit this, though they will never speak it out loud because we are all “pretending” that Islam is a religion of peace.
Islam and Muslims
Now to Islam. Just as in other religions there are the “secular” Muslims, the passive Muslims and the devout Muslims. Then of course there are the “crazy” offshoots that bring their own interpretation to the Koran.
Only ignorant fools are against secular Muslims and even passive Muslims have not been generally violent (except for one very real issue – many of the “radicalized” Muslims come from passively Muslim families.) Of course we all have known Muslims who tend to be very much like us. Friendly, helpful and generous.
However, we as a Nation continue to pretend that devout Muslims are also not a problem. I simply cannot agree. I have spoken to these devout Muslim men. They are not like you and me. They believe their wives and daughters are their property and a woman’s testimony is only worth 25% of a man. So if a woman is raped, she has to have 3 other female witnesses to refute the man, just to have all 4 of their testimony equal the one man. If she cannot, she is not only a victim but is then typically found “guilty” of the crime.
There are different “offshoots” of Muslim customs if you will, but in other countries and occasionally here in the US, we have seen men who have multiple wives. In a few countries it is normal and even a sign of “wealth” to have, along with his wife or wives, a boy slave who is trained to dance and then is forced to provide sex for the man and his friends.
If you think this is far from those of us here in the US, my wife knew a woman whose Muslim husband had another wife in his country of origin.
Honor killings among devout Muslims have horrified both Europe and the US. Just google and see all the news stories that come up. No doubt some of the stories will be from last week.
It is OK and even prescribed in the Bukhari to kill any Muslim for converting to secularism or any other religion. And the Koran states that if someone converts to Islam, and then later leaves the Muslim religion it is OK to kill them. In many moderate countries anyone “attempting to convert” a Muslim is given 15 years imprisonment. These individuals are often beaten and worse. There have been all too many stories of peaceful Christian individuals who have kept to themselves, but were robbed and beaten and then afterwards accused of attempting to proselytize someone in what appears to be a “cover” for the violence against them.
Devout Muslims really do believe that through strength, they will eventually take over the world.
And of course, we all agree that Radicalized Muslims are awful. They have killed countless people, both Muslims and others. Their crude and horrific actions continue to shock us. But equally as shocking is that nearly all of their actions have been taken from the example of Mohammed.
So then, I have to ask a question.
Why am I being told that Islam is fine and a religion of peace?
It appears the more you strictly follow Christianity, the better a person you are. The more you strictly follow Islam . . . well, you draw your own conclusion.
What are you wrestling against?
But now, let be honest.
A swing away from Christianity and to secularism helped fuel fascism and communism. Millions dead after that debacle and still many people around the world are repressed.
A nation that refused to “follow” Christianity and did not want to take their religion too seriously ushered in the Nazi regime. Millions dead. And don’t think it is over. Repression against Jewish individuals is on the rise in Europe. Belgium just issued “warnings” to Jewish people which among other things included a request that they not walk home in large groups after services.
In its early stages, evolutionary thinking, that we are here by chance and there is no master design for us, and that we as a people are evolving into something “better” led many to commit horrific deeds. This view helped lead many to believe that there could be “perfection” and Australia, the US and Germany saw forced sterilizations and more. And the westernized world has mixed this view with a “woman’s right” to her body since there is no God and no overall commands to obey. This has lead to the largest of all and the most horrific mass killings against the most defenseless individuals – abortion.
And on and on we can go.
So is Islam the enemy or is there something even deeper?
This makes me think of Ephesians 6:12
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
Perhaps the real enemy cannot be seen. Yes, many representatives of this evil are very real and very dangerous. And politicians would be wise to better understand and fight against them. But ultimately, and when it comes to you and me – who are we wrestling against?
As Christians, we should be in prayer and on our faces before God. Asking God to do a work in us and help us to put on the armor of God each day.
Ephesians 6:10-18 (NIV)
The Armor of God
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God,so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
If you view this passage as just a children’s story, it is time to take it seriously!
