I can see where this is going and it isn’t good.
The NY Daily News is an example of the present day American perception of prayer and God.
In reality, the prayers being offered were for the families and loved ones of the victims. But they are also asking for prayer for our nation. But the press seems determined to attack the Republican Candidates as “impotent” on the issue of stopping “mass shootings.” Of course, fixing a corrupt society so we can continue to remain free and be relatively safe, is not an option for the NY Daily News, who on one hand denies there is a God and refuses to follow any mandates they disagree with from the Bible, but on the other hand demands that this non-existent God is a failure for not stopping really bad men.
But before we mock the NY Daily News, as noted in a previous blog Gun Control is all an immoral society has.
And more disturbing than mocking people who believe in prayer is the prevailing view of God and prayer by many in the US. In some ways it is the age old question. If God is a loving God, why do bad things happen? Maybe bad things can happen to bad people who do not believe in God and prayer, but not us! (And yes, I understand that the NY Daily News does not say they believe in God but they seem to assert that because some do, then their prayers should work.)
There is a disturbing assumption by many Christians and by those who hang around the edges of Christianity. It goes something like this:
There is a battle above the Earth. A battle of Good and Evil. Evil tries to win, but if there is a loving and gracious God, He will beat back Evil so it cannot do too much harm, at least not to the good people. Man will live his life as he has decided is best, and God will stand by to keep Evil at bay. However, if man is frustrated with Evil, it must be God’s fault, and God is to blame.
Interesting though, is that man, specifically those complaining, do not want God to interfere with how to live one’s life. These people want to reserve the right to decide what is Evil. As far as the NY Daily News is concerned, the murder and wholesale destruction of unborn babies is not Evil and in fact a good thing.
Oddly enough, they will also agree that the Country that gave the world an efficient way to use fossil fuels, the very fossil fuels responsible for lengthening millions of lives all over the globe with heat, hot water, the production of more food than ever thought possible, modern medicine and living conditions never even dreamed of by previous generations, stopped horrors such as Nazism, beat back horrifying and bloody regimes including communism, is also Evil.*
So to make sure we are all understanding the NY Daily News correctly, here is what I hear them shouting:
Let us murder our unborn, mock the accomplishments of our blessed country and forefathers, decide for ourselves what parts of the Bible we want to obey, and damned be God if He does not stop people from being mean to me and my friends, because I don’t want to feel unsafe in the wicked world I helped create!
The really sad part of statements by the NY Daily News and by others – their sin and their unregenerate heart will keep them from seeing the truth. We cannot win them over with logic. We can scream up and down, all high five each other when we put up clever or condemning memes and pictures on our social media. We can complain about the wickedness of our present day society, but the very solution the NY Daily News mocked, is in fact, the only answer we have.
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” II Chronicles 7:14
Can I point out something obvious? This is not calling for the editors of the NY Daily News to humble themselves. This is calling for “my people” who are “called by my name” to humble themselves and seek God. We need to turn from our wicked ways. Then God will heal our land. The NY Daily News called the proclamation for prayer to heal our land “meaningless platitudes.” Actually, for the NY Daily News, prayer would be meaningless. It is the prayers of a righteous man that availeth much. (James 5:16)
Only God and revival can change this wicked broken land. Only the prayers and repentance of the Christians can heal this land.
Christians, let us fall on our faces before God! Let us cry out for our sin. We have far too long winked at sin and participated in the mass consumption of filth and ungodly philosophy. From our schools, to our media and government policies, we need a serious healing. But it must start in our hearts first and then our land.
We have stood by for far too long.
Let us pray. Let us seek God. Let us turn from our wicked ways. Yes, you and me.
*Please note, I am not saying the US is a nation who has done everything right. I am saying they have done many great things in the world. But instead of acknowledging those great things, our nation continues to be labeled as “evil” by many.
